Out of this world

Desperate times call for desperate measures. In a clear sign of desperation by a flurry of bloggers on the "right", the latest comes from the Department of Defense's Missile Defense website: http://www.mda.mil/

Apparently at issue is the redesign of the Missile Defense logo;

And the outlandish claim of its resemblance to the Islamic crescent.

For the subset of "righties" who've taken to criticizing such trivialities as the way Obama throws a baseball, the type of jeans he wears, the type of dog he buys, the fact that he reads from a teleprompter, how much golf he plays, or any other such thing, this most recent find is sure to please and add to the conspiratorial assertions of the president as a Muslim or at the very least a Muslim sympathizer (nevermind the Constitution of the United States doesn't preclude a Muslim or even a Mormon for that matter from serving). What's more, in so much as it will provide them with a week's worth of blog commentary, it too will serve the likes of Keith Olberman and Chris Mathews similarly as they point out the unhinging of the Republican party; the grasping at straws if you will.

To be sure, this president's policies are so completely and absolutely antithetical to the great American Experiment and unquestionably worthy of great criticism. And, it is the opinion of this author that it is on these substantive issues and policies where we should focus our attention and criticisms while providing clear solutions and ideas to counter them. It requires independent thought and a certain level of intellectual fortitude to educate oneself about the ideas and issues (something that most Americans haven't the patience or tolerance for which explains their affinity for opinion based news organizations and radio personalities).

Of course in a nation where consumerism reigns supreme, it is only fitting that its citizenry find it preferable to identify with the simplicity of labels, symbols, logos, rather than the substantive "text" that accompanies such visual eye candy.

And to those individuals, I leave you with this:

Agreed, the flury of outrage on that 'logo' seems trivial: as near as I can tell, they maintain their
formal 'acceptable' label and use the 'modern' one as a web topliner.
Curious, that bottom photo you present...is that an actual eclipse, or a 'stylised' eclipse?

The bottom photo is a picture of the sun rising over earth from space. And, to be certain, it is far more representative of the new logo than is the Islamic Crescent. Rightly so given that the missile defense is designed to thwart ICBMS in the upper atmosphere.

So we can't EVER criticize something that isn't directly policy driven? That's rather boring.

I didn't say that at all Beth. But, what you happens when people take to criticizing the president on such mundane and trivial matters is they lose all of their credibility when it becomes necessary to criticize something of substance.

People tend to tune out when all they're hearing is criticism for the sole sake of criticism. It's not unlike a husband who tunes out the wife that is constantly nagging him about not squeezing the toothpaste tube from the end or never remembering to put the toilet seat down. Partake in it often enough and you'll lose listeners when it matters most.

Here's another thought. Some people actually don't like thinking or talking about policy stuff (I know, hard to imagine!) But for these people, that kind of stupid non-consequential stuff does matter, so the sum total of all the bad decisions the Obama administration makes means low approval ratings (which we are indeed seeing).

AND leaving the toilet seat up is very annoying!
