Fine Line Music Cafe, Minneapolis, MN
The Tricky show at the Fine Line on Saturday night was, in one word, Wicked. That we were celebrating Kristie's birthday made it that much more enjoyable.
Tricky, for the uninitiated, is a producer and a musician, he is noted for a dark, rich and layered sound and a whispering sprechgesang lyrical style. Having gotten his start with an English soundsystem "The Wild Bunch" which later tranformed into the band Massive Attack, Tricky then branched out on his own with his hugely popular debut Maxinquaye and never looked back. While his early success was with sidekick Martina Topley Bird, whose melodious lyricism is making waves on its own, his new female sidekick doesn't quite stack up.
Nonetheless, the show Saturday night was a smash. And the best part?....
...when the band launched into a cover of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" in which his female sidekick took over mic duties while Tricky himself stepped down off stage and proceeded to make his way through the crowd greeting everyone.
Low and behold he made his way over towards us when Kristie reached out for his hand and told him it was her birthday. In his infamous deep growl he wished her happy birthday, gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I shook his hand and told him we've been longtime fans and were glad to see him after such a long hiatus.
Wicked me bredda wicked..to tha mas.
