F@#* You Collectivist!

Forward: On October 25th I was on my way home from Grant's house after a 4 hour stint of literature dropping. Heading northbound on Penn Avenue from 34th Street to 42nd Street, a guy pullled out in front of me at 36th Street and I crashed into him. I own a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport. I only have 7 more payments on it (I didn't buy it new folks) and the vehicle only has 64,000 miles. Aside from a few minor scratches and few hardly noticeable dings, it is a perfect vehicle. Needless to say, the other guy's insurance company has declared it a total loss. And so...I'll be in the market for a new car very soon here.

This morning:

This girl on the bus was asking me how my car thing was coming along and I mentioned to her that I was going to be in the market for a new car (see picture) because they wanted to total out my Cherokee.

She asked me what I was thinking of getting and I told her another Jeep but this time probably a Grand Cherokee (I don't drive my car to and from work. I primarily use my car for errands and we take it when we go camping which is why I need a car which is suited for those needs. And besides, I don't really need a justification now do I?).

This other woman on the bus, Mary (a liberal to the core; a global warming adocate as well) said: "Oh? That strikes me as odd."

I asked "Why?"

She said because I always struck here as so in tune to current events and politics et al. and that she thought I was more inclined toward a more fuel economical vehicle for environmental betterment and the "common good".

Honestly, I just about damn near threw up.

What is it in society that people subscribe to this?

It's supposed to be some virtue that we sacrifice ourselves, our liberty, our happiness and everything that we work towards for this false altruism that is "the common good"???

I just don't get it.

I told her my existence on this earth is to pursue no other cause than the one that I wish to pursue.

I then reminded her that despite the assertions of president elect Barack Obama, we ARE a nation of individuals and that I am not a collectivist but an individualist. And as such, I will live my life according to my own code, wishes, desires, etc.

I further reminded her that in so doing, I understand and accept other's rights equally and so I will not infringe upon their life or their desire to do the same.

She went on to say "Well I suppose the argument could be made that your actions could have deletarious consequences to others with respect to raising the cost of fuel and the environment."

I told her I wouldn't accept such a ridiculous premise until she could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that my purchasing (or anyone's purchasing) the less fuel economical Jeep Grand Cherokee was creating such deletarious effects upon my fellow man that recourse was deemed justifiable.

I reminded her that if she wished to embark down that road, an equal argument could be made with respect to the undeniable cost and burden as a result of environmental regulation. I also asked her for reliable contradictory evidence that would counter the data findings of the EPA which show that despite rising GDP, Population, Vehicle Travel, etc., air pollution continues to decline and has never been cleaner since at least the '70s.

Come on Mary I'm waiting.....

(waiting for you and your ilk to whither on the vine and die that is)

Personally, I would recommend a toyota SUV...but then again who gives a you know what what I think! :)

I own two Toyota mini vans and I do not drive them because I haul a bunch of kids around, in fact I have no kids. I like the room.

Of course I am always asked where the "team" is....

I don't recycle because when it first started I was all gungho and then one time they refused to pick up my recyleables because I had not washed them! I figured that the amount of water used to wash garbage was a bigger waste than not recycling so.....wash garbage...get real!

Everybody just loves to tell you what to do, what to believe, and what is wrong with your thinking....and they call this freedom....

Go ahead make a statement and get yourself a Jeep in the brightest color you can find! Make sure they see you as you drive by!

I got a kick out of recalling this quote from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's quite apropos given this conversation on the bus and my current auto woes.

Ferris Bueller: I did have a test today. That wasn't bullshit. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, so who gives a crap if they're socialist? They could be fascist anarchists - that still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. Not that I condone fascism, or any ism for that matter. Isms in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an ism - he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon: "I don't believe in Beatles - I just believe in me". A good point there. Of course, he was the Walrus. I could be the Walrus - I'd still have to bum rides off of people.

Personally I'm in the market for a car that's ultra fuel efficient... as long as it pollutes like a burning carbon factory.

The worst case is that there are people lining up with ways to "make the world a better place" by taking our freedom and destroying it (and bailing out the Bad Three automakers in the process).

Read it and puke.

Patrick,

If I decided to sell my freedom on ebay I wonder how much I would get for it?

Not that much anymore. Probably shouldn't have voted for obama. :)

I am wondering if you got your Jeep Grand Cherokee yet!

Haven't gotten it yet. In fact, I'm still waiting for the check to arrive in the mail. Apparently it's on the slow boat from China.

Still looking to find the best deal. I had seen a really nice '05 Limited (whereas the one above is the Laredo). The Limited is a bit more trail savy.

Will keep ya posted....
