Foot in Mouth Disease

I fully intended to address this when it happened. Unfortunately, you've likely already heard it. Nonetheless, while we've always known the socialist tendencies of many Democrats existed, the enclosed video and the shocking comments of California Representative Maxine Waters are not only proof positive of their existence, the are abominable.

Moreover, given Maxine's obvious blundering with respect to the english lanquage, might I suggest that her time would be better served working on getting the Appeals Court to overturn their decision on homeschooling. Seems quite evident that Maxine could use a few tutorial sessions on the proper use of english herself.

There seems to be an epidemic of foot in mouth lately, is it something in the water?

Just in Washington apparently.

What she was probably trying to say is that with 10.89 billion in profits in the 1st quarter of 2008, why do we the tax payers still have to give Exxon 2.4 billion in subsidies? She was probably wondering why Exxon spent more money buying back their own stock than they did exploration and why the Oil companies kept their subsidies in the new energy bill while Solar and wind energy lost theirs? And why do they need these subsidies when they pay all of it to their CEO? Why does their CEO need 21.7 Million per year when the rest of us struggle to fill up our tanks?

She was probably also wondering why in 2007 did US oil companies receive 17 billion dollars in tax breaks? When we only spent 57 billion on important things such as education.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the Texas oil men who sit in the White House?

I think that's what she meant to say.

Maybe if she aspired to run her business at some point in her life or even go out into the world and get a real job, she might not have to ask.

I don't know why the Representatives don't just respect the request that was made and allow the oil companies to drill.

And yeh, I don't understand the subsidies thing either. That's ridiculous.

Tax breaks aren't subsidies. A tax break is merely returning money to you (or company) that is rightfully theirs to begin with.

A subsidy on the other hand is a transfer of wealth from one individual (or group of individuals) to whom it belongs to another to whom it does NOT belong.

I understand subsidies to farmers, yet why would the oil companies need subsidies? I don't know why oil companies would need subsidies or tax breaks. The only reason I can think of is as an incentive to invest in the exploration of alternate energy sources.

I think we should let them drill for oil. The high gas prices are killing us. We can't hardly afford to go anywhere.

Tax breaks spur development. But, what you need to remember is that oil companies aren't in the business of alternative energy sources. They're in the business of oil.

Moreover, when you say you "understand" subsidies to farmers, are you implying that those subsidies are warranted?

I will tell you that from my perspective they are not.

Because, what happens is people start to rationalize their own respective subsidy. That then begets the cycle of everyone doing it.

Farmers don't need subsidies. They can purchase crop insurance if they have a drought season or a bad storm. The problem is however that a significant number of them don't purchase it. And why should they??? I mean they know full well the government (i.e., taxpayers) will bail them out.

Subsidies only induce a moral hazzard; irresponsibility.

Actually, there are times in which I've found the whole concept of subsidies a little confusing. Subsidies appear to make a little more sense in relation to farming because this is a profession that we most definitely need. Everyone has to eat, yet the idea of insurance makes sense too, so I'm not going to argue the point.

What really, really, really doesn't make sense, though, is subsidies to oil companies. What!? Why!?!!

I don't understand why a booming business like that even needs tax breaks, unless of course they are going to pass the savings on to the consumers, but would they? I just don't know.

If we are going to make cuts in government spending, subsidies may be a much better place to start than some of the other stuff like workman's comp., veterans benefits, disability and the like, meanwhile they can send a bunch of these illegals home. They are an enormous drain on our system.

Wait a minute! Aren't subsidies when the government buys up the excess, so that the price of the crops doesn't drop too much, crippling the farmer. This doesn't have to do with drought. This has to do with excess. I think I need this explained to me again.
